About Mid-Ohio
The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio returns to the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course for the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season. This indycar race at Mid-Ohio takes place over Fourth of July weekend and showcases open-wheel racing at one of America's most competitive road courses. The natural terrain track in Lexington, Ohio provides a unique challenge for drivers and teams competing in the series.
The Mid Ohio Sports Car Course
Mid Ohio Sports Car Course sits on 380 acres of natural terrain and features a park-like setting with green grass and trees throughout the facility. The indycar series uses the 2.258-mile, 13-turn configuration for racing at Mid-Ohio. This layout bypasses a chicane and creates a passing zone into the Keyhole section. The back portion of the track allows cars to reach speeds approaching 200 mph.
The circuit uses an auxiliary starting line on the backstretch for safer rolling starts. Grandstand seating accommodates 12,000 spectators, while observation mounds increase total capacity to over 75,000. The FIA classifies Mid-Ohio as a Grade Two circuit.
Support Series and Schedule Format
The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio weekend features support races from INDY NXT by Firestone and three developmental ladder series from the USF Pro Championship Presented by Continental Tire. These series showcase young drivers working to advance to the NTT IndyCar Series.
Practice sessions for the 2026 season feature a new format. An initial 40-minute segment allows all cars on track together. Two 12-minute group segments follow, splitting the field by odd and even numbered pit boxes. Warm-up sessions expand from 25 minutes to 30 minutes for the 2026 season. IndyCar officials plan to clear lapped cars ahead of leaders more aggressively during late-race restarts at Mid-Ohio and most other events.
Expected Competitors for 2026
The NTT IndyCar Series brings a competitive field of drivers and teams to Mid-Ohio. Four-time series champion Alex Palou aims for his fifth title in 2026. Six-time series champion Scott Dixon continues to extend his records for seasons with a win, consecutive seasons with a win, consecutive starts, total starts, podiums, and top five finishes.
Will Power joins Andretti Global for the 2026 season and looks to add to his all-time record for pole positions. Several drivers including Palou, Rinus VeeKay at Juncos Hollinger Racing, Santino Ferrucci at AJ Foyt Racing, and Scott McLaughlin at Team Penske are on pace to reach their 100th career NTT IndyCar Series race start during the 2026 season.
The 2026 season brings new teams to the grid and potentially new drivers such as Mick Schumacher, who begins his rookie season with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
Technical Regulations for 2026
IndyCar implements updated technical and procedural regulations for the 2026 season. For permanent road courses like Mid-Ohio, teams must use one set of primary compound tires and one set of alternate compound tires during the race. Drivers must complete at least two green-flag laps on each required tire compound set to satisfy the rules. The previous requirement for alternate tires to be new has been removed for 2026.
New superspeedway flaps deploy in a spin or rearward moment to reduce the likelihood of a car lifting off the ground. These are mandated for the Indianapolis 500.
History of IndyCar Racing at Mid-Ohio
The Mid Ohio Sports Car Course opened in 1962 when Les Griebling and local businessmen created a venue for weekend sports car racing. The original 16-turn layout was modified after one year. Oak Tree Bend was removed and replaced by the Thunder Valley downhill straight, establishing a 15-turn, 2.400-mile layout in 1963.
IndyCar racing, then known as CART, first visited Mid-Ohio in 1980. Johnny Rutherford won the inaugural race. Jim Trueman, founder of Red Roof Inns and a road racer, purchased the track in 1982 and initiated major renovations including permanent grandstands, garages, and amphitheater-style seating.
The track underwent significant refurbishment in 1990. This work included resurfacing, widening, and the creation of an alternate 13-turn, 2.258-mile circuit that indycar has used since then. Another extensive renovation took place in 2006 with a complete resurfacing of the track and pit lane. Connectors were added in the Keyhole section for multiple configurations. Green Savoree Racing Promotions has owned and operated the track since 2011. Honda has sponsored the IndyCar Series race since 2007.
