About Silverstone

The Moto2 British Grand Prix at Silverstone represents a key fixture in the 2026 FIM Moto2 World Championship. This intermediate class race brings elite riders to one of the fastest circuits on the championship calendar. Silverstone delivers a unique challenge with its high-speed layout and flowing corners that test rider skill and machine performance.

The Silverstone Circuit

Silverstone Circuit spans two English counties, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire. The Grand Prix circuit measures 5.890 kilometers (3.666 miles) in length. Riders navigate 18 corners during each lap: 10 right-hand turns and 8 left-hand turns.

The current layout was introduced in 2011. It includes the Arena infield section with corners like Village, The Loop, and Aintree. The modern Silverstone Wing pit complex serves as the operational hub. Famous corners include Abbey, Farm Curve, Brooklands, Luffield, Woodcote, Copse, Maggotts, Becketts, Chapel, Stowe, Vale, and Club.

The circuit's character emphasizes speed. Riders maintain high velocities through multiple sections. The flowing nature of the track rewards smooth riding and precise line selection.

Technical Specifications

All Moto2 teams use a control engine: a 765cc Triumph three-cylinder unit. This standardized engine produces approximately 140 horsepower. Riders select from 7 engines for the complete season. The minimum combined weight for bike and rider equals 217 kilograms, with the motorcycle weighing 150 kilograms.

Moto2 bikes reach maximum speeds up to 295 kilometers per hour. A standardized electronic management system is supplied to all teams by the championship promoter. This ensures competitive balance across the field.

Tires and Regulations

Pirelli serves as the exclusive tire supplier for Moto2. The 2026 season introduces new standard rear tires: soft SC0 and medium SC1. Front tires include soft SC1 and medium SC2 options. Riders receive 8 front tires and 9 rear tires for each race weekend.

New regulations for 2026 specify that minimum rear tire pressure must not fall below 1.50 bar (22 PSI). This rule affects tire management strategy throughout practice, qualifying, and race sessions.

Race Weekend Format

Moto2 riders complete two 40-minute free practice sessions. These sessions establish an initial ranking. Riders positioned outside the top fourteen in combined practice results participate in Qualifying 1 (Q1). This session lasts fifteen minutes.

The four fastest riders from Q1 advance to Qualifying 2 (Q2). They join the top fourteen from practice to contest the top eighteen grid positions. Q2 also runs for fifteen minutes. Each grid row contains three riders.

Silverstone History

Silverstone hosted the first Grand Prix in 1948. The circuit held the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship race on May 13, 1950. King George VI attended that first championship event, accompanied by Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. This remains the only time a reigning monarch visited the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The site began as a Royal Air Force bomber station during World War II, opening in 1943. Original runway sections remain visible and were incorporated into track design. The circuit has used over 15 different layouts throughout its history.

Notable Features

The British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) owns Silverstone Circuit. This invitation-only organization includes successful British racing drivers. Many corners carry names linked to historical landmarks, local features, or individuals. Luffield Priory, Saint Thomas A'Becket (Becketts and Chapel), Maggotts Moor, Copse, and Stowe School all inspired corner names.

The "Silverstone hare" serves as an unofficial mascot. Hares occasionally appear during race meetings. One famously ran onto the track during the 1950 British Grand Prix. The circuit's unique position straddling two counties adds to its distinctive character.

What to Expect

The Moto2 race at Silverstone showcases intermediate class competition at its finest. The circuit's speed and technical demands create close racing. Multiple overtaking opportunities exist, particularly into corners like Brooklands, Luffield, and Stowe. Riders must balance risk and consistency over race distance.

Weather conditions can change rapidly in the British summer. Teams prepare for various scenarios. Tire choice and bike setup become critical factors. The combination of fast corners and heavy braking zones tests both rider endurance and machine durability.

Silverstone in 2026 promises compelling Moto2 action. The circuit's reputation as a rider favorite stems from its flowing layout and high-speed nature. This race will provide valuable championship points and showcase the depth of talent in the intermediate class.
