Joker Lap

Track Terminology

A Joker Lap is a mandatory alternate route on a rallycross track that each driver must take exactly once during their race, adding a strategic element to the competition.

In rallycross racing, the joker lap is typically a longer section of track that bypasses part of the normal racing line. When a driver takes this alternate route, it usually costs them about two seconds compared to the standard lap. However, drivers get to choose when during the race they want to take this required detour.

The timing of when to use your joker lap becomes a crucial strategic decision. A driver might take it early in the race to avoid getting stuck behind slower cars, or they might save it for later to make a surprise move when competitors aren't expecting it. Some drivers use the joker lap defensively to break away from someone chasing them closely.

Think of it like having a "get out of jail free" card that you must use at some point during the game. You can't save it for next time – every driver must complete their joker lap before the race ends, or they'll receive a time penalty that could ruin their finishing position.

The joker lap creates exciting moments for spectators because it can completely change the race order. A driver who seems to be falling behind might suddenly jump ahead of competitors who haven't taken their joker lap yet. This adds an element of unpredictability that keeps fans guessing about the real race positions until everyone has completed their mandatory alternate route.

Most racing series don't allow drivers to take the joker lap on the very first lap of the race, ensuring that the strategic element comes into play as the race develops and drivers must make calculated decisions about the best timing for their alternate route.
