DAKAR

About Dakar

The Dakar Rally stands as one of the most challenging and prestigious off-road endurance events in motorsport. Founded in 1978 as the Paris-Dakar Rally, this annual competition tests competitors across vast distances and diverse terrains including deserts, mountains, and rocky landscapes. The 2026 edition marks the 48th running of the event and serves as the opening round of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), taking place from January 3-17 in Saudi Arabia—the country's seventh consecutive year as host.

Event Structure and Format

The 2026 Dakar Rally spans 14 days of competition, covering approximately 8,000 kilometers total with around 5,000 kilometers of timed special stages. The event begins with a Prologue stage in Yanbu to determine starting order, followed by 13 competitive stages. A rest day is scheduled midway through in Riyadh, providing teams crucial time for repairs and recovery. Daily stages typically combine a liaison section on public roads with a timed off-road special stage, where navigation relies primarily on roadbooks provided at the start of each stage.

A significant innovation for 2026 is the introduction of Marathon-Refuge Stages, replacing previous Marathon and 48-hour Chrono formats. During these multi-day stages, competitors operate with minimal support in remote bivouacs, restricted to competitor-to-competitor assistance only. The route also features four split stages where two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles follow separate courses, enhancing safety and navigation challenges, particularly for car drivers who cannot rely on motorcycle tracks for guidance.

Competition Categories

The Dakar Rally accommodates a wide range of vehicles across multiple categories. Bikes are divided into RallyGP for professional factory teams, Rally2 for privateers and semi-professionals, and Original by Motul for riders without technical support. Four-wheeled categories include Ultimate (T1) for high-performance prototypes, Stock (T2) for production-based vehicles, Challenger (T3) for lightweight prototypes, and SSV (T4) for side-by-side vehicles. Trucks compete in T5.1 for competition vehicles and T5.2 for assistance trucks. The M1000 category showcases innovative alternative technologies including hydrogen power, while the Classic category features historic vehicles from the 1980s through 2005 competing in regularity rally format.

Notable Competitors and Teams

The 2026 field includes multiple Dakar winners and championship contenders. Multi-time champions Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah, and Sébastien Loeb lead the car entries, alongside reigning champion Yazeed Al-Rajhi and 2025 W2RC title winner Lucas Moraes. Daniel Sanders heads the motorcycle field, while 14-time Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel returns in the Stock category. Martin Macík aims for his third consecutive truck victory.

Why Fans Follow Dakar

The Dakar Rally attracts followers for its unique blend of extreme endurance, navigation skill, and mechanical reliability testing. Unlike circuit racing, success requires not just speed but strategic route planning, survival in harsh conditions, and the ability to repair vehicles under pressure. The event's sheer scale—crossing multiple regions from Yanbu through AlUla, Ha'il, and into previously unexplored western areas like Al-Bahah and Aseer—creates compelling stories of human determination and technological innovation. Since moving to Saudi Arabia in 2020, the rally has continued to evolve with enhanced safety measures, environmental initiatives targeting low-carbon status by 2030, and cutting-edge vehicle technology that pushes the boundaries of off-road motorsport.
