About Silverstone

The Silverstone Circuit in Great Britain hosts Round 7 of the FIA Formula 2 Championship. This race weekend takes place at one of motorsport's most historic venues and serves as a support event for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix. The circuit is located near the villages of Silverstone and Whittlebury in Northamptonshire, England. Formula 2 at Silverstone delivers high-speed racing on a track that tests both driver skill and race strategy.

Race Format and Schedule

The Silverstone f2 round follows the standard Formula 2 weekend format across three days. Friday includes a 45-minute Free Practice session followed by a 30-minute Qualifying session. The qualifying results set the starting grid for Sunday's Feature Race.

Saturday features the Sprint Race, which covers approximately 120 kilometers or runs for 45 minutes, whichever comes first. The Sprint Race grid reverses the top 10 finishers from Friday's qualifying session, creating varied starting positions.

Sunday's Feature Race is the main event, spanning approximately 170 kilometers or 60 minutes. This race includes a mandatory pit stop where teams must change all four tires. Drivers must use at least one set of each specification of dry-weather tires during the Feature Race, unless wet-weather conditions require rain tires.

The Silverstone Circuit

The Silverstone Circuit uses its Grand Prix configuration, which measures 5.891 kilometers (3.660 miles) in length and contains 18 turns. The circuit is known for its fast, flowing layout and challenging high-speed corners that demand precision from drivers.

Key Corners

Abbey serves as Turn 1, a flat-out opening corner named after the 11th-century Luffield Abbey. Copse at Turn 9 is a fast right-hander and ranks among the quickest turns on the circuit.

The Maggots, Becketts and Chapel sequence from Turns 10 to 14 represents the circuit's most demanding section. This series of interlinked high-speed corners requires significant downforce and precise car control. Maggotts is the fastest turn on the circuit, with cars experiencing substantial lateral forces.

Stowe at Turn 15 is another high-speed corner that leads onto the Hangar Straight. This 770-meter straight provides overtaking opportunities, as does the Wellington Straight. Both straights feature DRS zones where drivers can reduce drag to gain speed.

Track Characteristics

Silverstone places high demands on tires due to its numerous high-speed and long-radius corners. Tire management becomes a critical element of race strategy. The circuit's open location means wind can significantly affect car handling and performance. Pirelli typically selects harder tire compounds for Silverstone to cope with the high-energy corners.

Championship Participants

The FIA Formula 2 Championship features 11 teams, each running two cars, for a total grid of 22 drivers. The teams and drivers for the season include:

Invicta Racing fields Rafael Câmara and Joshua Duerksen. Hitech TGR runs Ritomo Miyata and Colton Herta. Campos Racing enters Noel León and Nikola Tsolov. DAMS Lucas Oil competes with Dino Beganovic and Roman Bilinski. MP Motorsport fields Gabriele Minì and Oliver Goethe.

PREMA Racing runs Sebastián Montoya and Mari Boya. Rodin Motorsport enters Martinius Stenshorne and Alexander Dunne. ART Grand Prix fields Kush Maini and Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak. AIX Racing competes with Emerson Fittipaldi Jr. and Cian Shields. Van Amersfoort Racing runs Nicolás Varrone and Rafael Villagómez. Trident fields Laurens van Hoepen and John Bennett.

Technical Specifications

Formula 2 operates as a spec series, meaning all teams use identical equipment. This approach emphasizes driver skill over technological advantages.

Chassis and Engine

All cars use the Dallara F2 2024 chassis. This chassis mirrors the latest Formula 1 cars in terms of safety regulations and advanced technologies, preparing drivers for potential progression to F1. The cars feature a titanium Halo device that meets full FIA F1 2024 safety standards.

A Mecachrome-assembled 3.4-liter V6 single-turbocharged engine powers each car. The engine produces approximately 620 horsepower at 8750 rpm and includes a fly-by-wire accelerator system. Teams rebuild engines after approximately 8000 kilometers. The series uses sustainable synthetic fuel in partnership with Aramco.

Tires and DRS

Pirelli supplies all tires for Formula 2, providing F2-specific slick and wet tires mounted on O.Z. Racing magnesium rims. Each driver receives five sets of dry-weather tires per weekend: three "prime" specifications and two "option" specifications. Drivers also receive three sets of wet-weather tires.

The Drag Reduction System (DRS) operates in designated zones that align with Formula 1 zones. Drivers can activate DRS freely during practice and qualifying. During races, drivers can use DRS when they are less than one second behind the car ahead at the detection point, starting from lap three onward.

Silverstone History and Background

Silverstone Circuit evolved from a Royal Air Force bomber station during World War II. The perimeter roads and runways were converted for racing purposes. The first British Grand Prix took place at Silverstone in 1948.

The circuit hosted the inaugural FIA Formula 1 World Championship race on May 13, 1950, marking a significant milestone in motorsport history. While the British Grand Prix initially alternated between different circuits including Aintree and Brands Hatch, Silverstone has been its permanent home since 1987.

Formula 2 has raced at Silverstone since the current championship's predecessor, GP2, began competing at the circuit in 2005. Earlier iterations of Formula 2 also visited Silverstone, with the first F2 event at the circuit taking place in 1949.

The British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) owns Silverstone Circuit. This organization is an invitation-only club for successful British drivers. Many of Silverstone's corners take their names from historical local features, including Luffield Abbey, Maggot Moor, and St. Thomas à Becket. The start/finish straight was renamed the Hamilton Straight in 2020.

The circuit attracts passionate crowds, with British motorsport fans providing strong support throughout race weekends. The combination of historic significance, challenging layout, and competitive racing makes the Silverstone f2 round a highlight of the championship season. The high-speed nature of the circuit and the importance of tire strategy create varied racing conditions that test driver abilities across different skill sets.
