About Spa-Francorchamps

The FIA Formula 2 Championship returns to the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium for the 2026 season. This f2 event at Spa-Francorchamps features Sprint and Feature races that run alongside the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix. The circuit presents one of the most challenging tests in the championship calendar.

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps Overview

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps stretches 7.004 kilometers (4.352 miles) through the Ardennes forest in Francorchamps, Stavelot, Wallonia. This track holds the distinction of being the longest circuit on the Formula 1 and Formula 2 calendars. The layout combines long straights with high-speed corners that test driver skill and precision.

The circuit features significant elevation changes throughout its length. Drivers navigate the famous Eau Rouge and Raidillon uphill section, the high-speed Blanchimont left-hander, and the tight La Source hairpin. Speeds regularly exceed 330 km/h on the straights. The Ardennes location creates unique weather patterns, with different sections of the track often experiencing different conditions simultaneously.

Track Characteristics

The f2 cars face multiple technical challenges at Spa Francorchamps. The track demands strong aerodynamic efficiency for the fast sections and precise mechanical setup for the slower corners. Safety improvements made in 2022 include additional gravel traps and expanded run-off areas at Eau Rouge and Raidillon.

The Ardennes microclimate makes weather unpredictable. Rain can fall on one part of the circuit while other sections remain dry. This variable weather adds strategic complexity to tire choices and race decisions.

Race Format for 2026

The Spa-Francorchamps f2 weekend follows the standard championship structure. Friday begins with a 45-minute Free Practice session followed by a 30-minute Qualifying session. This Qualifying session determines the grid positions for both races.

Sprint Race

The Sprint Race takes place on Saturday. The grid order reverses the top 10 positions from Friday Qualifying. The race runs for 120 kilometers or 45 minutes, whichever comes first. Points go to the top eight finishers: 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. The driver who sets the fastest lap receives an additional point if they finish in the top 10.

Feature Race

Sunday's Feature Race uses the full Qualifying results for the grid. This longer race covers 170 kilometers or 60 minutes. All drivers must complete a mandatory pit stop where teams change all four tires. Drivers must use at least one set of each dry-weather tire specification unless wet-weather tires are needed. The top ten finishers score points: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 1. An additional point goes to the fastest lap if the driver finishes in the top 10. Pole position awards 2 points.

Competitors in the 2026 Season

The 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship consists of 11 teams with 22 drivers. The series operates as a spec championship where all teams use identical equipment. This format emphasizes driver skill and team strategy over technical development. Teams announce their full driver lineups as the season approaches. Invicta Racing has confirmed Rafael Câmara and Joshua Dürksen for their 2026 roster.

Technical Specifications

Formula 2 operates as a one-make series to create equal competition and prepare drivers for Formula 1. All technical components remain the same across every team.

Chassis and Engine

Every team uses the Dallara F2 2024 chassis, which entered service in 2024 and continues through 2026. The chassis design prioritizes safety and promotes close racing through its aerodynamic characteristics. A Mecachrome-assembled 3.4-liter turbocharged V6 engine powers all cars. The engine produces approximately 620 horsepower at 8750 rpm and generates 570 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm.

Fuel and Tires

The 2026 season uses fuel with a higher percentage of sustainable components. The series works toward fully synthetic fuels by 2027. Pirelli supplies all tires for the championship, providing f2-specific slick and wet weather compounds. Each driver receives five sets of dry-weather tires per weekend, with three sets designated as the prime specification.

Additional Components

The f2 cars feature a six-speed sequential gearbox and carbon-carbon brakes. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) assists overtaking in designated zones. Safety features include the Halo cockpit protection system and other FIA safety innovations. Teams cannot develop or modify their cars individually, ensuring complete uniformity across the field.

History of Spa-Francorchamps

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps has a long racing heritage that dates back to 1921. Designers Jules de Thier and Henri Langlois van Ophem created the original 14.9-kilometer track using public roads that connected Francorchamps, Malmedy, and Stavelot. The first car race occurred in 1922, with the inaugural 24 Hours of Francorchamps following in 1924. The circuit hosted its first Grand Prix in 1925.

The Eau Rouge and Raidillon corner combination appeared in 1939. Safety concerns about the high-speed public road circuit led to a major redesign in 1979. This modification created the current 7.004-kilometer permanent facility. Formula 2 began racing at Spa-Francorchamps in 2017.

Notable Features

Several unique aspects define the Spa-Francorchamps experience. The circuit earned its length record among current f2 venues at 7.004 kilometers. The Bus Stop chicane was an actual bus stop when portions of the circuit used public roads until 2000.

The Eau Rouge corner takes its name from a 15-kilometer Belgian river known for its reddish-brown deposits. This river served as an administrative boundary during the Roman Empire. Despite the circuit's long history, no Belgian driver has won the Belgian Grand Prix. The first scheduled race in 1921 was cancelled because only one driver entered.

The 2026 f2 races at Spa Francorchamps promise competitive action across the weekend. The combination of a challenging circuit, variable weather, and closely matched machinery creates opportunities for strategic racing and driver skill to determine the results.
