ℹ️ About Qatar GP
The Qatar GP brings MotoGP racing to the Losail International Circuit in Qatar for another season of competition under the lights. This venue hosts the only full night race on the MotoGP calendar, creating a unique racing environment at the circuit located in Lusail, just north of Doha. The event features all three championship classes: MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3, with a Sprint Race adding extra competition on Saturday.
The Circuit
Losail International Circuit stretches 5.419 kilometers across the desert landscape. The track features 16 corners combining medium and high-speed turns, with six left-hand corners and ten right-hand corners. The main straight measures 1.068 kilometers and provides the primary overtaking opportunity for riders.
The circuit maintains a smooth racing surface following resurfacing work completed in recent years. Artificial grass surrounds the track perimeter to prevent desert sand from reaching the racing line. The venue holds an FIA Grade 1 license and can accommodate up to 52,000 spectators in its grandstands.
Night Racing at Qatar
The state-of-the-art lighting system at Losail International Circuit enables MotoGP to race after sunset. This night racing format creates distinct conditions compared to daytime events. Track temperatures average around 22.8°C during night sessions, significantly cooler than the daytime desert heat. The floodlit circuit produces a visually striking setting for motorcycle racing.
The 2026 MotoGP Grid
The 2026 season features 22 riders competing across multiple teams. Toprak Razgatlıoğlu joins Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP in his first MotoGP season, while Diogo Moreira makes his debut with Honda LCR. Established competitors include Francesco Bagnaia with Ducati Lenovo Team, Marc Marquez, Pedro Acosta with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and Fermin Aldeguer.
Teams participating include Ducati Lenovo Team, Honda Team, Aprilia Racing, and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, among others representing various manufacturers on the grid.
Technical Regulations for 2026
The 2026 season represents the final year of 1000cc engine regulations before new 850cc rules take effect. Michelin continues as the tire supplier for all MotoGP competitors this season, providing series-specified tires for all classes. These technical specifications shape the racing dynamics at Qatar and throughout the championship.
Circuit History and Development
Losail International Circuit opened in 2004 after less than one year of construction by 1,000 workers. The facility cost $58 million USD to build and immediately joined the MotoGP calendar. The circuit hosted its first Qatar motorcycle Grand Prix in 2004.
The venue introduced night racing to MotoGP in 2008, becoming the first circuit to host a full night race in the championship. Beyond MotoGP, the circuit has hosted Formula 1 since 2021, along with GP2 Asia Series, World Superbikes, and the World Touring Car Championship over the years.
Recent facility upgrades have enhanced the paddock area, media center, medical center, and parking facilities. The circuit has achieved FIA three-star environmental accreditation for its operational practices.
What Makes Qatar GP Special
The desert setting of Losail International Circuit presents unique challenges and characteristics. The night race format distinguishes this event from all other rounds of the MotoGP championship. Racing under artificial lighting creates specific visual conditions for riders and provides fans with a distinctive atmosphere.
The Qatar GP serves as an important early-season test for teams and riders as they establish championship form. The smooth track surface and mix of corner types allow riders to showcase different racing styles and bike setups. The long main straight rewards strong acceleration and top speed, while the technical sections demand precision and confidence.
This 2026 edition continues the tradition of MotoGP racing in Qatar, bringing the fastest motorcycle racers to the Middle East for competition under the floodlights of Losail International Circuit.
